Baroque and Romantic Organ Music in Market Sunday Concert
The Music on a Market Sunday concert on 24 March at 12:30pm in the Uniting Church will feature music by Dietrich Buxtehude and Joseph Rheinberger performed by Lena Schmalz.
Buxtehude is the composer that the young J S Bach walked almost 400 kilometres to hear and learn from (and to decline the job as his replacement since one of the conditions was to marry Buxtehude’s daughter who was 30 years older than the young Bach). It is however due to his admiration for the older composer and the transcriptions he made of his music that much of Buxtehude’s music survives.
Rheinberger was a 19th century composer and organist, born in Liechtenstein but mainly working in Munich. A significant contributor to romantic organ music he was also the teacher of Richard Strauss, Engelbert Humperdinck and Wilhelm Furtwangler.
This is a great opportunity to hear one of Armidale’s leading organists play some fascinating repertoire.
Admission to the concert is free, though donations are encouraged. While there are no CoVid restrictions social distancing is always a good idea. Tea and Sausages will be available at the Uniting Church before the concert.
